A new treatment for fungal infections of the skin, nails and scalp has been developed by researchers at the University of South Florida. Researchers are developing a new formulation, Lamisil, that could help treat fungal infections of the skin, nails and scalp.
The new formulation has been developed with the help of a team from the University of South Florida who led the work at the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy.
The team included Dr. William F. Baker, Ph. D., assistant professor of dermatology and clinical pharmacology at the University of South Florida and Dr. Daniel R. C. Jones, Ph. D., assistant professor of pharmacology and clinical pharmacology at the University of Florida.
The study was funded by the University of South Florida. Dr. Baker and Dr. Jones also served as lead investigators and lead the study.
Jones said the findings “will have implications for dermatology, pharmacology, and even practice.”
His research is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the American Board of Pharmacology, the American Board of Dermatology, and the National Council of Therapeutics.
“This study is not about finding new treatments for fungal infections of the skin, nails or scalp,” he said.
“Our approach could change how patients respond to antifungal therapy, whether they have fungal diseases or not.”
Jones is director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the National Institute of Health.
The study was published in the June 8, 2017 issue of The Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
